rihanna’s we found love will now always remind me of our trip down to dallas. this video is really good. i am so grateful that talented, strong, incredible women like her exist in this world as inspiration.

yesterday on the bus while shuffling through my ipod i stumbled across the band that is going to get me through my comprehensive exams in two days. i know this lady is typically more well-known for her other pursuits and i don’t have anything against the kills, but it’s just not really the kind of music i’m interested in. discount, on the other hand, reminds me of high school, of riding around in vero beach, florida with my cousin in her old beat up BMW and listening to ataxia’s alright tonight on tape. i love how powerful mosshart’s voice is - how these really heavy lyrics against the backdrop of pop-punk work so well and create these songs that are both meaningful and fun to listen to.

The Get Up Kids - Shorty

I love this song. I used to have this video on my iPod.

four minute mile still sounds SO GOOD.

i wish i could have frozen this band in time when they were in high school, because nothing they did after this record was the same. i love the energy of the room where the band is playing in this video, the cheesy acting bits and everything about the song itself, which i still listen to at top volume with the windows rolled down in my car. this song reminds me of the year 2000, of being sixteen and in high school and working my first job at bennigan’s, of buying this album on the recommendation of some dude i had a crush on whose name i don’t even remember, of volume cd exchange and hoodies and driving around in my old car. i love that this song, which is about a kid at college who misses his mom, still strikes a chord with me after all these years.

ryan and i are working on our wedding playlist. so far it’s very heavy on the 70’s which fits in with the ‘theme’ (granted it’s a very loose theme) and we are currently trying to decide which song will be our first dance. it won’t be this one, but we will certainly be playing this at some point and i will be all over the dance floor doing my best freddie mercury imitation ever. i can’t wait to get married in less than a week!

some kind soul has posted a bunch of urusei yatsura videos on youtube and is thus enabling me to relive 1998 all over again. when i look back at my life on the internet (which began around 1995), from america online and dial-up and mp3s being these HUGE files that took forever to get, to being able to find almost anything in the world on youtube, i get sort of misty-eyed thinking about how amazing things are now. how before i had to stay up until 2am on sunday nights to watch cool videos on 120 minutes, and the only way i could see them again was to record them on a VHS tape that would inevitably wear out. and 120 minutes was only two hours a week; i’ve never seen a video for “kewpies like watermelon” before because i never would have seen it on MTV, and i’ve loved this song and this band for what feels like forever. things that used to take so much effort now take so little; music was once on someone else’s terms and now it’s totally on mine. that is simultaneously awesome and weird.
